There’s an adult animated series focused on Scooby-Doo’s Velma (that is appropriately titled Velma) coming out at HBO Max (just as she officially came out as queer on a separate series mere days ago!), and during New York Comic-Con, creator Mindy Kaling shared who would be voicing the Mystery Inc. characters. We also got a teaser for the show, which makes clear that this comedy isn’t family-friendly fare.

During the show’s panel via Variety, Kaling revealed that Sam Richardson (Veep, M.O.D.O.K.) will voice Shaggy, Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians) will be Daphne, and Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will voice Fred. Kaling will also voice the titular Velma.

If those actors weren’t enough to pique your interest, check out the extended cast, which includes Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ming-Na Wen, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

This HBO Max series has no connection to the recently released Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, a feature film in which Velma gets the hots for costume designer Coco Diablo. That movie is family-friendly fare, while Kaling’s Velma is targeted toward adults only.

The show’s official logline describes the show as “the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

The 10-episode first season of Velma will premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2023.
